Using Microsoft Outlook to Manage CRM Data
CRM is the wave of the future, and Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 is a fully developed solution that is extremely cost-effective on a hosted CRM platform. The best part about it is that since it integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook, the most used business email client in the world, it is even easier to utilize.
Now the question you may ask is “In order to integrate CRM with Outlook, which version of the Outlook interface do I need to install? The standard online install or the scary (Advanced) Offline Access install?”
The only difference between the two is that the Offline Access installation places a local SQL Express database on your computer/laptop. This is a cool feature because it allows you to store a local copy of your entire CRM database on your PC so you can access it offline.
The reason I call Offline Access installation “scary” is because the word “Advanced” tends to frighten people away. They think to themselves, “SQL on my computer? Am I going to have to do all sorts of extra configuration?”
The answer is a resounding “Not really.”
The great part of the new Windows Installer that CRM uses is that it automatically downloads and installs all of the required components for you. You are no longer stuck digging around on Microsoft’s download site trying to locate all of the separate pieces.
Plus, after it downloads and installs all of the required components, it checks your computer to make sure you still have the required Service Packs, patches and services running. The only thing you might need to do is turn on the Indexing Service.
Many CRM hosts, including Fpweb.net, will support configuration. If configuration makes you nervous or if you are having difficulties and you’re hosting your CRM, call your provider for assistance.
