How to add a Google Map to a SharePoint Server 2010 page

This entry is part 8 of 13 in the series SharePoint tip of the month

Your customers know right where to find you on the Web. Now, easily point them to your physical location with a Google Map located on a SharePoint Server page. Using the Content Editor Web Part, it’s easier to embed a map than you think!

This is an incredibly useful tool, especially for those of you in the real estate industry. Here’s the basic procedure:

  • Define the map coordinates at the online map provider’s site
  • Copy the code for an embeddable version of the map
  • Paste the code into the HTML view of a Content Editor Web Part

First, we need to grab the map.

Connect your Outlook inbox to Facebook and Windows Live

This new add-on to Microsoft’s Office 2010 Outlook Social Connector lets you plug Facebook and Windows Live right into your inbox! Designed to simplify your daily routine, it helps you stay connected with your friends, family and colleagues by letting you view your social network while you’re working with your email.

With Outlook Social Connector, you’ll be able to view status updates, wall posts and profile pictures from right within Outlook. Another great feature is the ability to add “Friends” to Facebook and Windows Live directly from the Outlook People Pane to grow your social network faster.

Interested? Here’s a short video about the additional features of the Outlook Social Connector.

Where to get it

Outlook 2003 and 2007 users can download the latest version from the Microsoft Download Center. Office 2010 users can get the Outlook Social Connector update through Microsoft Update. Feel free to use the Facebook provider download and the Windows Live Messenger provider download or see what  other social networks are available through the Outlook Social Connector provider page.

SharePoint Enterprise Search 2010: The “Google” for your organization’s information

It doesn’t matter whether your organization has 20 employees or 20,000; when you need certain bits of information, you crave split-second access. However, just like the Rolling Stones warned us, it seems that in the world of search, you can’t always get what you want. Yes, you’ll get what you need eventually but it will cost you valuable time.

For the last decade, search giant Goggle has clearly upped the ante on how easy it is to find what we’re looking for and how fast we expect this information to be in our hot, little hands (or in this case, pulled up on our computer screens, iPods or smartphones). There’s no denying it – our Google-influenced minds can make it seem like your IT team isn’t up to par in the search department. However, there is hope.
