SharePoint Startup Company Profiles

At the end of December, Jose Antonio Morales (Chief Innovation Officer at NYCP) posed an interesting question to our industry in an EndUserSharePoint.com blog post titled, “Is the SharePoint Community an incubator of entrepreneurship?”. The survey he collected seems to indicate that, yes, the SharePoint community is teeming with pioneers and product launches. Of those responding to the survey, a whopping 42% classified themselves as business owners or managers. The second largest survey group- 20% of participants- designated they are actively using SharePoint as a platform to drive innovation.

Simultaneously, Microsoft is actively promoting entrepreneurship. Through its BizSpark initiative, Microsoft hopes to develop and foster a thriving ecosystem of small companies developing software applications for platforms like Office, SharePoint, SQL Server and Azure. And due to the rapid adoption and growth of SharePoint, a number of companies have popped up focusing specifically on the SharePoint platform.

But who are these SharePoint innovators? What kind of new products are they launching? Which new SharePoint tools have been introduced by entrepreneurs? In this post, we’ll take a closer look at a few of these newly minted SharePoint startups.

Likewise, Tagle can be used to attach SharePoint files and folders to an email using the drag and drop interface. The goal? Tagle aims to reduce the amount of time spent managing SharePoint. The result is better, more efficient storage which demands far less disk space (up to 80% less). Calinda’s family of complementary applications includes MailSpace e-mail conversion, SocialFactor social network conversation engine, MindUp project collaboration and InsideOut mobile collaboration.

In their own words:
“Calinda Software’s mission is to make team collaboration natural and efficient.”
– Alex Mermod, CEO

The Prelude pop-up window can be used to instantly access SharePoint data from within Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel or PowerPoint simply by hovering the mouse over linked text. This same technology has been rolled into a new enterprise-class product called Insight. The Insight app promises to “accelerate your cloud-based information” by immediately displaying relevant, related information from other documents or database queries. In addition to SharePoint products, Loqu8 also develops ‘iNterpret Chinese-English’ (iCE) software that delivers in-context translations and audio pronunciations. Loqu8 is a privately-held company with headquarters in Silicon Valley. Keep an eye out for more SharePoint apps from Loqu8 in the future.

In their own words:
“Imagine touching a screen or moving your mouse over unfamiliar words and suddenly understanding foreign languages, scientific journals and gaining new insight. Loqu8 calls this augmented learning and we believe it will change the way people learn and access information.”
