In this post, Fpweb.net’s Director of SharePoint Engineering Chris Schwab shares his experiences at a recent SharePoint Saturday community event.
After a month and a half break in my travel schedule, I hit the road again. Over the first weekend in January, I packed up the Fpweb.net booth and headed out to spread the word about Hosted SharePoint to members of the SP user community in Virginia Beach, VA.
Virginia Beach… in mid-January… that alone means this event is destined to be great. Of course it did SNOW on us out there last year, but this one was different… much different. Temperatures in the 60s, sunshine, and a great venue at the Tidewater Community College made this one stand apart.
The first surprise was meeting up with Eric Harlan (@ericharlan) and Geoff Varosky (@gvaro) on the flight into Norfolk, VA. It was a short 35 min flight, but it was nice having some people to talk to on the way over. Later that night I headed over to the Speakers dinner at the Shifting Sands Club and found out what a fantastic lineup of speakers were brought in for this event.
After hanging out and getting reacquainted with everyone, 7am on Saturday was pretty early. So much great stuff to share, you have to get an early start! The crowd was fantastic, but I also enjoyed talking with the other sponsors about their products too. Here at Fpweb.net, we try to stay on top of the latest tools, venders, consultants, etc so that we can make the best recommendations for our client’s needs. You can take a look at the SharePoint Saturday sponsors.
Later in the day Mark Miller (@eusp) gave his session “To Host or not to Host”. Battling through a cold, Mark delivered like he always does, Illustrating that there’s a solution for every need, and that all of them have benefits and hurdles.
The day wrapped up similar to most events, with a SharePint! A chance to socialize with like-minded people, reconnect with old friends, and meet new ones. I spend the majority of the night speaking with Ken Price (@kennethprice) from Microsoft, but also had some time to chat with Fabian Williams (@fabianwilliams), and get my picture taken with Olivia Stewart’s (@oliviastewart) polaroid…
SharePoint Saturdays deliver on several levels and continue to be very beneficial for members of the SharePoint Community. Register for a SharePoint Saturday event today and don’t miss the opportunity to catch one in your area! Maybe I’ll see you there!
