I know that after reading my blog on OneDrive for Business, you’re loving the fact that all your documents are now synced up. Your life is now complete with the freedom of worry-free, aggravation-free file storage and accessibility.
Wait. What’s that you say?! Some of you are living the worry-free lifestyle but not aggravation-free?
Here’s the problem: You’re getting prompted several times for your credentials even though you’ve already signed in. No one likes having to sign in all the time, especially when you’re inputting the same info over and over again. Well, pull up a seat (if you’re standing near your computer for some reason or reading from your phone while walking down the road or operating heavy machinery) and let Eddie show you how to fix it.
Sign in once and be done with it!
Before I get into solving your worries and strife, let’s get back to describing the root of the problem.
Some users experience that ever annoying pop up box for credentials, even after your first initial successful login. First of all, you’ll always have to type in your credentials whenever you first log into OneDrive after logging into your desktop. No avoiding that. But a little bit of security is never a bad thing…
This is for the users that, even after a successful initial login, keep getting hassled for their credentials every so often during their session.
Unfortunately this is a common issue, a bug some might even say. More specifically, even after you check the box that says “Keep me signed-in” or “Remember my credentials”.
Two final things before I get into the fix:
- This DOES involve editing your Registry. Yes. I used the ‘R’ word… I myself am more than familiar with navigating around the Registry. It is almost like a second home to me. But for you who are unfamiliar, heed this warning: You can do some major damage in there, if you are not careful and do not pay attention to what you are editing. Lucky for you, I will be very specific with showing you what to edit.
- You will need to have Admin rights to your local machine. If you are trying to do this on your work computer and your work has some strict policies in place, you may have to be prepared to invest in annual replacement keyboards. You will have to continue typing in your creds.
Okay. Let’s get started shall we?
How to Avoid Multiple Sign In Prompts with OneDrive
First, open up the ‘Regedit”. A few ways to accomplish this: In Windows 8, you can simply start typing in ‘regedit’ on your Start screen, and the program will eventually come up in the search results.
If you are running Windows 7 or earlier, click on the Start Button and then click on ‘Run…’
Then, at the next pop up box, just type in ‘Regedit’ and click ‘OK’.
After you have opened up ‘Regedit’, you will see a screen that resembles Windows Explorer/File Explorer.
Now here is where you have to ensure you are opening up the right directory in your Registry. So pay close attention to the next steps, and you will be perfectly fine.
First, you must find, click and expand ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER’.
Then look for “Software’ and expand that directory.
If your ‘Software’ subtree, looks anything like mine, you’ll see a ton of directories under this section. Look for ‘Microsoft’.
Now look for ‘Office’, then ‘15.0’, then ‘Common’ and finally ‘Identity’. This will be your Final destination.
Now, while still in the ‘Identity’ directory, move your mouse cursor over to the right side of the screen with all the ‘Registry’ entries.
Now, find any open white space, right click to open up a submenu, click on ‘New’ and then click on ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value’.
Name the new Value you just created to ‘NoDomainUser’.
Next, you will need to double click the ‘NoDomainUser’ entry and change the ‘Value data’ to a number ‘1’. Please ensure you do not change anything else as shown below.
Then simply click on ‘OK’ and you’ll be taken back to the ‘Identity’ directory. At this point you have made all the changes, so you can now close the ‘Regedit’ application window.
The only thing left is to test to see if the settings above worked, by accessing your OneDrive for Business folder and seeing if you still get multiple credential prompts. Obviously if it worked, you should not see multiple prompts anymore.
Once again, I hope I have made your work life a better place to be and have set you free from the annoyance of multiple sign ins. Free from any worry, aggravation and most importantly, prolonged the battery life of your keyboard.
