Modify your Leadership to fit the current work atmosphere
While very few people like to deal with change at work, it’s inevitable in a growing business.
Companies looking to make changes must modify their behavior to respond to continuous new knowledge. This modification also begins with leadership. Leaders must embrace learning and not let roadblocks effect the process. After all, an organization is only as good as what they know and how they use that knowledge.
Leaders should encourage an atmosphere and a company culture that is open to (and adapts to) change. Business needs will change so the company must change as well. In order for continued growth, sometimes difficult decisions must be made. It will be up to the leaders within the company to reinforce these changes, both negative and positive. By doing this, the team will be in a better position to face additional changes in the future.
Through this process, the management team should lead by example and work to ensure that the change is clearly communicated to the staff.
Three Basic Steps to Being a Leader
1. Encourage open communication
Employees are more willing to engage in a change especially when the driving force of the change is effectively communicated to them. A company that embraces change should encourage risk taking and thrive on sharing new ideas. The company should also have a solid action plan for achieving their vision which is clearly communicated in an atmosphere that engages the employee. It’s important to let them know that their opinions are heard and respected.
In times of change, leaders must understand that shared vision is the key component in the overall success of the business. Organizations who have shared vision work to involve everyone in the implementation of the change. Change requires doing something different or outside of your norm.
2. Employ the right people
Change in the workplace is not always an easy task to achieve because not everyone will easily buy in to this new philosophy. This is where leaders begin to wonder if they hired the wrong people.
Employing the perfect person to represent your business can be quite a task. Employment choices will often determine if your business will be successful. New hires, management, as well as all other employees, must embrace the company culture and be willing to contribute 100% to making the business prosperous. Buying into the company culture may be the biggest hurdle for a new employee who has spent years working in an entirely different environment.
Recruiting the correct team of people will be essential to the company’s growth. This team will make all the difference in promoting company culture and moving forward with employees who are more open to accepting and enforcing change throughout the organization.
3. Keep resistance at bay
No matter what, there will always be those who are resistant to change.
People get so comfortable with the status quo that the change becomes foreign to them. This resistance comes because we are so used to doing things the same way that we’ve always done them. The most common reason people are resistant to change is because they’re afraid of the unknown and concerned with all of the uncertainty that comes along with it.
The most difficult part of combating resistance to change is to understand the cause of it. After all, knowing is half the battle. In order to overcome resistance to change in your current culture, employees need to feel that they can contribute in a positive way. Develop a strong communication plan and consistent message to provide a sound platform to launch the change within the organization.
At the end of the day, leaders must work together to create a culture that is not complacent, but one that encourages, promotes, and welcomes change.
